Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Water Polo sweeps Sunday Matches, Finishes 3-1 on the Weekend

Ann Arbor, Mich. - The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team swept Sunday afternoon matches to conclude their stay in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Rainbow Wahine defeated Indiana 15-8 and Salem University 17-5.

The 'Bows started 3-1 in consecutive seasons. The previous season resulted in a Big West Title and an NCAA quarterfinal visit.

Game 1- #5 Hawai'i 15 , #10 Indiana 8

The match began with freshman Paula Prats Rodriguez scoring on an assist from Lucia Gomez de la Puente. A tight and low-scoring first quarter ended with Indiana leading 3-2 heading into the second.

The Rainbow Wahine fired in the second quarter, and freshman Elyse Lemay-Lavoie scored two goals. While Olivia Kistler, Lucia Gomez de la Puente, Alba Bonamusa Boix, and Emma van Rossum all added their tallies and carried an 8-5 lead into the half.

Bonamusa Boix dented the twine in the third, once on a penalty shot and the other coming on a 6-on-5 powerplay. Lemay-Lavoie added another mark to the stat sheet to complete her hat-trick and extend the 'Bows lead to 6 heading into the final frame.

Sophomore Lara Luka continued her dominant weekend where she scored two more goals on back-to-back possessions, putting the game out of reach. Sophomore Bridget Layburn picked up her second win in goal and accumulated four saves throughout the game.

Game 2 - #5 Hawai'i 17, Salem 5

The Rainbow Wahine overwhelmed the Tigers in a 17-5 victory.

From the get-go, senior Ann Inoue took matters into her own hands. Inoue won the first sprint of the match and subsequently netted the first two goals for Hawai'i. She ended the match with a career-high four goals en route to the win.

UH scored four more goals in the second, including one from Gomez de la Puente with less than one second left on the clock. The 'Bows took an 8-4 lead into the half.

In the second half, the defense led the way as they held Salem to one goal. Layburn kept the goal untouched throughout the third quarter and totaled four saves from direct shots. Senior Molly DiLalla snagged her first win in goal this season, where she totaled five saves.

Luka matched Inoue with four goals of her own and tallied her second four-goal match.

The Rainbow Wahine will return to the pool in two weeks, on February 12, for the Triton Invitational in San Diego. Times and matchups are TBA. For updates, check hawaiiathletics.com.
