LAS VEGAS, NEV.— The final tune-up before the MPSF Championships wrapped up on Saturday for the University of Hawai'i swimming and diving team in a dual meet with UNLV and Wyoming at Jim Reitz Pool inside of Buchanan Natatorium.
The Rainbow Warriors recorded a win over Wyoming 197.00- 155.00, building off their lead from the day before, but came up short to UNLV 191.00-148.00. For the Rainbow Wahine, their head-to-head with Wyoming ended in a tie at 175.00, while dropping their contest to UNLV, 176.00-160.00.
UH will now prepare for the MPSF Championship as the men's team will look to climb the mountain for the first time since 2020. But for the women's team, they're looking to claim their sixth consecutive conference championship title. The first day of events for MPSF Championships is set to take place on Wednesday, February 16th, and will go to the 19th.
SWIMMING
This time, the Rainbow Wahine picked up another relay win, and it came in the 200 medley relay. Graduate
Anna Kotonen, senior
Emma Frey, junior
Anna Friedrich, and freshman
Kathryn Ivanov teamed up like they did the day before in the 400 medley relay for the victory. The foursome registered a time of 1:41.61, beating out their previous season-best time at the SMU Invitational of 1:41.81.
The women's team added two more top finishes on the day as Kotonen touched the wall at 22.86 in the 50 free, beating out teammate junior Gabby Williams. The second of the first-place finishes came in the 200 breast as freshman
Hannah Bailey clocked in at 2:18.32. The event also marked the 'Bows second, one-two punch as Ivanov placed second at 2:19.01.
Freshmen
Tomer Goldfaden and
Milan Bukovics claimed solo championship victories for the Rainbow Warriors. Goldfaden won the 200 breast, clocking in at 2:02.07, just ahead of Adnan Beji of UNLV at 2:02.47. At the same time, Bukovics battled for his first-place finish in the 400 individual medley claiming the win at 4:03.41, less than a second ahead of Mike Breitbart of UNLV. Bukovics added another top-three finish on the day, placing second in the 100 fly.
DIVING
The first of the two days saw UH pick up a first-place finish and a second-place finish between the men's and women's finals.
Senior
Max Burman won the three-meter dive, registering a score of 368.75. Burman scored 63.00 or above in five of his six dives. On Friday, his best dive came on his sixth and final dive, tallying a 69.70 with a forward 2 ½ somersault 2 twist pike.
Junior
Daphne Wils came just short in the one-meter event, placing second at 286.85, a mere seven and a half points shy of front-runner Melissa Mirafuentes.
Saturday didn't produce the same success, but UH didn't pick up two fourth-place finishes. Senior Timothy Newtown scored 274.75 in the three-meter dive, as two of his dives scored under 40 points, but his final dive of the day was his best, scoring a 54.60 with a forward 1 ½ somersault 2 twist free.
The other fourth-place finish came from sophomore
Isabelle Lombardi in the one-meter, scoring a 241.90. Five of her six dives scored over 40 points, but it was her third attempt on a reverse 2 ½ somersault tuck that hurt her chances at a top-three spot, scoring a 23.80.
