Men's Tennis Splits Matches In Las Vegas

Box Score 1 LAS VEGAS, Nev.—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (1-1, 0-0 BWC) split their dual matches to open their first roadtrip of 2022. The Rainbow Warriors fell in a heartbreaker to start the weekend to host school UNLV, 4-3. But the 'Bows battled right back to roll over UC Riverside, 4-1 to finish the day. Both matches were played on the UNLV campus at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Friday.

The Rebels edged out the Rainbow Warriors in a hard fought match that was decided on the final singles match of the day.
 
UNLV took an early, 1-0 lead after winning two matches in doubles, with Milos Dabic/Zac Brodney defeating UH's Karl Collins and Simão Telo Alves, 6-2 on the No. 2 court. Hawai'i's No. 3 duo of Killian Maitre and Andy Hernandez then fell to UNLV's Christopher Bulus and Jordan Sauer who captured the doubles point with a 6-3 win.
 
Hawai'i battled back to tie the match at 3-3 in singles. Trailing 2-0, UH's Guillaume Tattevin begin the comeback bid with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over UNLV's Anton Omberg on the No. 6 court. UH's No. 2 Blaz Seric then knotted the score at 2-2 after cruising past Sauer in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. The Rebels went ahead in the match, 3-2, after No. 5 Zach Garner recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win over UH's Karl Collins.
 
But Hawai'i's Alves tied the match at 3-3. Alves held off UNLV's Dabic in a thriller that ended in a second set tie-breaker on the No. 4 court, 7-5, 7-6 (6). It marked Alves' fourth consecutive singles win to start the season.
 
With the score deadlocked at 3-3, the match hinged on the No. 1 match between Hawai'i's 11th-ranked and No. 1 Andre Ilagan and UNLV's Bulus. Ilagan came out strong seizing the first set in a tie-breaker. Bulus then was able to stave off three Ilagan match points to take the second set by a tie-breaker to force a third set. Bulus then pulled away to clinch the win for UNLV, 4-3. Final match score had Bulus winning, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (), 6-1.


Hawai'i 4, UC Riverside 1

Hawai'i and UC Riverside squared off in a non-conference match for both their second match of the day. The doubles competition was fierce. UH's No. 1 duo of Simão Telo Alves and Karl Collins held off UCR's Justin Lamy and Joshua Roth by a break, 7-5. The next two matches would both end in very tight tiebreakers. The Highlanders' No. 3, Daniel Velek and Aarav Sane edged out UH's Guillaume Tattevin and Kilian Maitre, 7-6 (8) to tie things at 1-1 in the doubles matches. Hawai'i's Axel Labrunie and Andy Hernandez clinched the all important doubles point on the No. 2 court by outlasting UCR's Nolan McCaig and Ryan Huynh  in a tie-breaker that went to extra play, 7-6 (7).

The Highlanders' Velek won the first singles match to tie the score at 1-1, defeating UH's Collins on the No. 2 court, 6-1, 6-0. But the 'Bows would then reel off the next three-straight matches to pull away from UC Riverside, 4-1. UH's No. 4, Maitre blew past Andreas Whelan-Merediz, 6-1, 6-0. Tattevin then rolled over Roth, 6-0, 6-4. Hawai'i's Cody Castro then clinched their first dual match of the season with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sane.

The Rainbow Warriors have a single match on Saturday against Weber State at 12:00 p.m. HT. They will conclude their time on the Ninth Island on Sunday with a single match vs. former WAC-rival, New Mexico State at 9:00 a.m. HT.
