HONOLULU – Former University of Hawai'i men's volleyball player Matthew Cheape is this year's recipient of the Pae Makaukau Alumni Recognition Award. Cheape received his award at the 11
thAnnual A'o a Koa Scholarship Dinner, Sunday, January 23 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Proceeds from the event will be used to help fund the Rainbow Warrior volleyball program for summer school scholarships, recruiting, video equipment and additional/camp staff. The event also featured a virtual silent auction.
A former libero for the Rainbow Warriors from 2010-13, Cheape is currently a firefighter for the Honolulu Fire Department. After playing professionally in Greece for one year, he returned to Hawai'i and worked as an ocean safety lifeguard and federal firefighter.
In 2013, Cheape was the team's primary libero, averaging 1.27 digs per set and finished with five double-digit matches. The 2008 Mililani High School graduate was a four-year letterman for the Warriors, appearing in 42 career matches.
