NEWS & NOTES
- Only Saturday's game will count towards the conference standings as Thursday's matchup will serve as a nonconference game. The Roadrunners took both contests in 2021 on their home floor, improving their record to 5-3 overall against UH all-time. On the flip side, the Rainbow Wahine are 2-0 all-time at home against CSUB; their last encounter came in 2015.
- The 'Bows enter the homestand with a 2-1 conference record, picking up wins against Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine. In recent memory, UH comes out of the gate slow against conference opponents as 2016 was the last time the team mirrored their current record, going 2-2, before winning 10 of their previous 12 and claiming the tournament championship. In 2015 when UH won the regular-season title with a 14-2 record, it started at 0-2.
- Graduate forward Amy Atwell has been on fire of late, scoring double digits in 10 consecutive games, and notching 20 points or more in four of her last five contests. Atwell leads the Big West in scoring with over 18 points per game while draining 27 threes on the season, the second-most in the conference.
- Graduate center Kallin Spiller is the only other player to average double-digit scoring with 10 points per game. Spiller missed five games from late November to early January due to injury but recently returned to the rotation playing 15 minutes off the bench.
ANOTHER STEP CLOSER TO HISTORY
Atwell most recently moved into the No. 2 spot of the all-time three-pointers made list surpassing Ashleigh Karaitiana, currently sitting at 156 and is pacing towards the top spot. Megan Tinnin, the all-time leader in made threes, sits at 167. Atwell's current pace is at 2.25 made threes a game, with 16 left on the schedule. This season, she is also the only student-athlete on the roster who has a chance at 1,000 career points, with 962.
LOVE THY THREE-BALL
Anyone watching Atwell over her career knows she loves to shoot the three, leading to her pursuit of the made three-pointers record at UH. She has attempted 422 three-pointers going into the weekend, putting her at No. 4 overall with former teammate Julissa Tago at No. 3 with 444, followed by Ashleigh Karaitiana at No. 2 with 448. At Atwell's current pace of 6.75 attempts per game, she will eclipse 500 attempts during her career. The only other player to attempt 500 or more threes at UH is Tinnin with 526. Even more astonishing is her career shooting percentage currently sits at .370, now No. 2 in the UH record book. If her trajectory stays as is, Atwell will be the only student-athlete to finish in the top 3 of career makes attempts and shooting percentage at UH.
NOW THAT'S IMPRESSIVE
Atwell is putting herself in rarefied air as one of the elite players to ever play for the Rainbow Wahine. With her current pace, Atwell will be the first 'Bow to average better than 17 points per game in a single season in over 20 years. After 12 games, Atwell is averaging 18 points per game. In the women's basketball program history, only two players have averaged 19 points or better as a senior. Judy Mosley averaged 25.7 points per game in 1989-90, and Nani Cockett averaged 19.4 in 1997-1998.
MIRROR, MIRROR
Freshman forward
Meilani McBee has put the entire conference on notice of late with her sharpshooting. McBee is second in the Big West in three-point shooting percentage at 51%. Against UCI, she went 5-of-8 from long distance, including two big buckets in the fourth quarter. In comparison, during the 2019-2020 season, Atwell hit 63 three-pointers and accumulated a percentage of 45% from beyond the arc for No. 3 in the nation. After the first 12 games, Atwell hit 28 threes. At this stage, McBee has hit 15.
