HONOLULU—As announced by the Big West Conference office this afternoon, graduate forward
Amy Atwell of the University of Hawai'i women's basketball team has been named the Player of the Week.
The weekly honor is the second of the year for Atwell, the first coming on November 22nd, following a weekend where she dropped 59 points against Portland and Portland State. On this go-around, Atwell is being recognized after notching her first double-double of the season in a 54-52 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Saturday. She accounted for 20 points and 12 rebounds while recording the game-winning bucket off a pinpoint pass from graduate senior
Kallin Spiller in the final moments of the game.
As the season continues, Atwell is putting herself in rarefied air as one of the elite players to ever play for the Rainbow Wahine. She is quickly approaching the all-time three-point record, currently sitting at 154, with Megan Tinnin holding the mark at 167 set back in 2011. She is also 74 points away from becoming the 23rd member of the 1,000 point club. But what might be the most impressive is what she is putting together in terms of a senior season. After 10 games, Atwell is averaging 19 points per game. In the history of Rainbow Wahine basketball, only two players have averaged 19 points or better as a senior. Judy Mosley averaged 25.7 points per game in 1989-90, and Nani Cockett averaged 19.4 in 1997-1998. Atwell will be the first 'Bow to average better than 17 points per game in a single season in over 20 years with her current pace.
Atwell and the 'Bows will look to add to their conference record with their first Big West road trip of the season later this week. UH is scheduled to play at UC San Diego on Thursday, followed by UC Irvine on Saturday.
