SANTA BARBARA, Calif.– The University of Hawai'i coed and women's sailing teams opened the 2021-22 season with the PCCSC Men's and Women's Singlehanded Championships as a pair of Rainbow sailors finished runner-up.
Originally scheduled as a two-day event, the PCCSC Singlehandeds were condensed to just one day of competition with a total of 10 races each for the men and women on Saturday. The breeze started at 6-8 knots from the southwest before increasing to 10-14 knots for the duration of the day.
Competing in his second singlehanded championship in the last three years,
Bastien Rasse had a solid second-place finish with 26 points, a full 10 points ahead of his nearest competitor. Stanford's John Kirkpatrick took home the regatta by placing first in six of the last seven races. A total of six sailors competed in the event.
On the women's side,
Morgan Carew made her college sailing debut and finished second with 25 points, nipping Erin Pamplin (26) of Washington. Stanford's Megan Grace was the runaway winner with 10 points.
The coed teams will be back in Californian waters, Oct. 2-3 for the PCCSC Match Race Championship hosted by Stanford in Redwood City, Calif., while the women next compete at the Stoney Burke Intersectional, also in the Bay Area, Oct. 9-10.
