HONOLULU − Coming off an individual win and a team win at the Big Wave Invitational, the University of Hawai'i cross country team will head to the UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday at UC Riverside's Agriculture Operations Course. The women's race will begin at 4:15 a.m. HT.
"We're looking forward to competing at Riverside for the first time in a few years," Hawai'i head coach
Tim Boyce said. "The fast course and quality competition will be a great building experience for our young squad. We've been practicing well since the Big Wave meet, this will be a great introduction to the 6,000-meter race distance."
In the first meet of the season, junior
Sophia Morgan won the Big Wave Invitational 5k race in 19 minutes, 19.6 seconds, the first cross country race for the Rainbow Wahine since November 2019.
Morgan led the 'Bows who had finishers behind her in fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth, 10th and 11th places as UH's seven scoring runners. It was the second time Morgan had raced into the top five of a meet a part of the UH cross country team and the first time the team had won the Big Wave Invitational since 2018. It is also Hawai'i's sixth Big Wave Invitational team win.
The Rainbow Wahine will attend the UC Riverside Invitational for the second time in two seasons (last in 2019). Sophomore
Sophia Lodigiani led the 'Bows in 2019 at the UC Riverside Invitational with a 6k time of 22:21.5.
