LAS VEGAS – The University of Hawai'i football team was picked to finish fifth in the West Division in the Mountain West's preseason poll that was released on the opening day of the league media days at The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas.
In a panel of the league's media, the Rainbow Warriors received 56 total points. Nevada was selected as the West Division favorite with 141 points and 19 first place votes followed by defending MW champion San Jose State (121 points, 5 first place votes), San Diego State (96), Fresno State (85, 1), UH, and UNLV (26).
In the Mountain Division Boise State received 23 first place votes and 148 points followed by Wyoming (115 points, 2 first place votes), Air Force (104), Colorado State (72), Utah State (47), and New Mexico (39).
The two divisional winners will meet in the MW Championship Game on Dec. 4.
Last season, the Mountain West did not split into two divisions due to a conference-only scheduling format. UH tied for fifth place among the 12 teams with a 4-4 overall record and was one of four Mountain West teams to play in a bowl game.
The preseason all-conference team will be announced on Thursday.
