2025 Football Season In Review

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

  • Finished the season with a 9-4 overall record - the most wins by a UH team since 2019.
  • Ended the year by winning the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl - the program's third consecutive bowl win and ninth bowl victory all-time.
  • Won nine games in a season for the 16th time in program history.
  • Went 7-1 at Clarence T.C. Ching Complex - the best home record by a UH team since 2007 (7-0).
  • Came in tied for fifth in the Mountain West (5-3) after being picked to finish seventh in the preseason poll.
  • Bookended the season with wins over ACC opponents, beginning the year with a 23-20 win over Stanford and ending it with a 35-31 bowl win over California.
  • The 21-point comeback against the Bears in the Hawai‘i Bowl matched the largest comeback win in program history (2007 vs. Washington, 2004 vs. Michigan State).
  • A program record 11 Rainbow Warriors earned All-Mountain West recognition.
  • Quarterback Micah Alejado was named Mountain West Freshman of the Year and kicker Kansei Matsuzawa claimed Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Year honors.
  • Matsuzawa became the first consensus All-American in program history and was named a finalist for the Lou Groza Award.
  • Head coach Timmy Chang was named the AFCA Region 5 Coach of the Year.
  • UH set a Mountain West record with 16 different conference player of the week recognitions.

  • Kansei Matsuzawa (PK): 93.1% (27-29) Field Goal Percentage, 100% (40-40) PAT Percentage, 121 points scored (6th in FBS), 11-12 on 40+ yard field goal attempts

 

MOUNTAIN WEST FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR:

  • Micah Alejado (QB): 66.3% completion percentage, 3,106 passing yards, 24 passing touchdowns, 285-for-430, 282.4 passing yards per game
     

ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST FIRST TEAM:

  • Jackson Harris (WR): 49 receptions, 963 rec. yards, 12 rec. TDs (6th in FBS), 19.7 yards per reception
  • Jackie Johnson III (DL): 29 tackles, 8.5 TFLs, 7.5 sacks, 2 FR

 

ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST SECOND TEAM:

  • De'Jon Benton (DL): 33 tackles, 9.5 TFLs, 5.5 sacks, 12 QBH,1 FF
  • Cam Barfield (KR/RB): 316 kick return yards, 1 kickoff return touchdown, 371 rushing yards, 4 rushing touchdowns, 257 receiving yards, 3 receiving touchdowns
  • Pofele Ashlock (WR): 76 receptions, 827 receiving yards, 8 TDs

 

ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST HONORABLE MENTIONS:

  • Micah Alejado (QB): 66.3% completion percentage, 3,106 passing yards, 24 passing touchdowns, 285-for-430, 282.4 passing yards per game

  • Zhen Sotelo (OL): 0 sacks allowed in 936 snaps, 936 snaps ranks 3rd in MW among all linemen

AFCA REGIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR

Timmy Chang was selected as the American Football Coaches Association's Region 5 Coach of the Year after guiding the Rainbow Warriors to their first nine-win season since 2019. Chang was one of five regional winners in the FBS.

THE TOKYO TOE

Kansei Matsuzawa (Tokyo Toe) took the country by storm after his walk-off field goal in Week 0 against Stanford. His historic season consisted of a program record 27 made field goals and a perfect 40-for-40 on extra point attempts. He was selected to multiple All-American First Teams and was a finalist for the Lou Groza Award which is awarded to the best kicker in the nation.

A SEASON TO REMEMBER

The 2025 season was one to remember, filled with exhilarating victories. From the walk-off win against Stanford to start the year to the Hawai‘i Bowl comeback vs. California, it was a year defined by unforgettable moments. Here are some of the season's best.

WEEK 0 vs. Stanford

The Rainbow Warriors took down an ACC opponent for the first time in school history on the leg of Kansei Matsuzawa, who made three field goals, including a 38-yard game-winner.

Week 7 at Colorado State

Micah Alejado threw three touchdowns – connecting twice with Jackson Harris – to send the 'Bows to their first bowl game since 2019 and first under Head Coach Timmy Chang.

Week 10 vs. San Diego State

Elijah Palmer took an interception 53 yards to the house, Cam Barfield returned a kick 86 yards for a touchdown, and Jackson Harris caught three first-half touchdowns as Hawai'i dominated all three phases of the game in its win over SDSU.

BOWL GAME SPOTLIGHT

Hawai‘i capped off its memorable season with a magical come from behind win over the California Golden Bears in the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl, rallying from down 21 points for a 35–31 comeback victory. The Christmas Eve thriller drew 2.7 million viewers nationwide, making it the most-watched Hawai‘i Bowl since 2013.

Luke Weaver entered the game and threw a 22-yard touchdown to receiver Nick Cenacle to seal the Warriors' comeback.

Pofele Ashlock earned Hawai'i Bowl MVP with 14 receptions,123 yards, and 2 touchdowns.

CLASS OF 2025

Hawai‘i celebrated 26 seniors on Senior Night with a 27-7 victory over Wyoming, marking a perfect end to the season.
