UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – University of Hawai'i men's golf teammates
Justin Arcano and
Justin Ngan advanced to the match-play portion of the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball before losing in the Round of 32 on Monday at Chambers Bay.
The pair tied for 13th overall in the two-day stroke play with scores of 5-under 66 at The Home Course on Saturday and 5-under 67 at Chambers Bay on Sunday. The low 32 "sides" – or two-man teams – qualified for match-play where Arcano and Ngan fell 5-and-4 to the 2015 Four-Ball champions Nathan Smith and Todd White. Smith is a four-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion (2003, 2009, 2010, 2012) and three-time USA Walker Cup competitor. White was a member of the 2013 USA Walker Cup Team with Smith.
This year marked the third appearance at the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball for Arcano and Ngan. The pair failed to make the cut in 2017 and 2019.
On Monday, the duo were 4-down after seven holes before winning their first hole with a birdie at the par-4, 10th. But Smith and White went par-birdie on Nos. 13 and 14 to claim the match.
Arcano and Ngan made the cut with the help of a 5-under 32 on the front nine on Sunday and went even par on the back to enter the clubhouse inside the Top 10 at 10-under 133. The cut came at 8-under 135 – matching the lowest in championship history (Bandon Dunes in 2019).
