HONOLULU − Fans cheered, ate popcorn and hot dogs in Les Murakami Stadium for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic but the University of Hawai'i baseball team was unable to use the buzz of the small crowd at Les Murakami Stadium on Friday night as UC San Diego took the series opener 6-2.
Stone Miyao and catcher
Tyler Murray each had two hits and scored the team's only two runs of the game in the eighth inning after UC San Diego pulled their starter after just 80 pitches and a 5-0 lead in the 8th inning.
Sophomore
Aaron Davenport, in his second-shortest outing of the season, threw 106 pitches over 5.2 innings, giving up five runs on four hits and four walks. Davenport struck out six, tied for his second-fewest strikeouts in an outing this season.
For the fourth time in five games, the Rainbow Warriors scored in just one inning, the eighth, after Miyao walked to lead off the inning and Murray lined his third double of the season into right-center field. A ground out scored Miyao and a single into shallow right field scored Murray.
Redshirt freshman
Trevor Ichimura was a bright spot out of the bullpen, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings. Freshman
Tai Atkins in his first appearance since April 11 tossed a full inning with a pair of strikeouts.
Redshirt junior
Adam Fogel's 12-game hitting streak came to an end after going 0-4.
Hawai'i struck out the fewest at bats (four strikeouts) since April 24 against UC Davis (three strikeouts).
