HONOLULU − Pitchers
Cade Halemanu and
Buddie Pindel spun gems on Saturday against UC San Diego to help the University of Hawai'i baseball team earn a split of the doubleheader, with a 4-2 loss and a 5-2 win, respectively. The Rainbow Warriors out-hit the Tritons in both games.
Game 1:
Sophomore starting pitcher
Cade Halemanu pitched a gem. His second scoreless quality start of the season with a career-best two hits allowed over 7.0 innings. Halemanu struck out five over 7.0 innings of 2-hit work while walking four but not allowing a run.
Fogel was the other bright spot for Hawai'i in the 4-2 loss to UCSD (20-27, 17-18 Big West) as the center fielder had three hits and an RBI.
The Rainbow Warriors scored first, with a 2-run seventh inning to score the first runs of the game. The Tritons would put four runs on Hawai'i's bullpen in the eighth inning, tagging sophomore
Li'i Pontes with the loss and sophomore
Cameron Hagan with his first earned runs allowed since April 11th.
Game 2:
The Rainbow Warriors (24-21, 16-19 Big West) had to come back down a run twice before taking their first lead of the game. UC San Diego scored a run in the first inning, that Hawaii answered with a run of its own. Same happened in the third inning. In the fifth inning, the 'Bows took their first lead, and then got three run cushion with a two-spot in the seventh.
Shortstop
Kole Kaler, who was named a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Award this week, doubled to open the game, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and subsequently scored on Fogel's first hit of the game.
In the third inning, right fielder
Scotty Scott got plunked before moving around the bases via singles from designated hitter
Dustin Demeter and an RBI single from left fielder
Jacob Igawa.
Kaler scored in the fifth inning after reaching on an error by the Triton's left fielder. Another sacrifice bunt and a stolen base moved Kaler to third where he scored via a sacrifice fly by Fogel.
UH scored two runs in the seventh inning with two outs in the inning. Three-straight singles by Scott, Fogel and Demeter scored Scott and Fogel on Demeter's base hit.
The pitching story of the second game came from junior
Buddie Pindel's career-high 5.1 innings and season-high five punch outs. Pindel did not allow a run to score as he held UCSD to five hits without walking a batter.
Redshirt freshman
Tyler Dyball earned his team-leading fourth save of the season, coming in in the ninth inning with two runners on and no outs, escaping thanks to a strikeout and game-ending double play.
Hawaii will look to earn a series split with UCSD on Senior Day on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. HT. Senior
Logan Pouelsen will get the start on the mound in his final game at Les Murakami Stadium.
