HONOLULU— The University of Hawai'i softball team fell in the first game of a three-game series Thursday evening to visiting UC Davis, 5-0 at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Â
The Rainbow Wahine (11-18, 10-12) dropped their ninth consecutive game dating back to April 30th. The Aggies (18-23, 12-10) added to their lead over the 'Bows for the third-place spot in the conference standings after dropping back-to-back games against Cal Poly.
Â
The Aggies got the night going early with two runs in the first frame against freshman starting pitcher
Jetta Nannen. UCD threatened again in the second, but a slick double play lead by junior shortstop
Nawai Kaupe ended the rally as she took a short hop up the middle, tagging the base and throwing on to sophomore first baseman
Dallas Millwood for the 6-3 turn.
Â
As the UH offense struggled to swing momentum in its favor, the Aggies capitalized in the third and fifth innings, adding two and one runs for a 5-0 advantage. While the 'Bows kept the visitors in check the rest of the way, the offense could not counter for the eventual final.
Â
Nannen notched her eighth complete game of the season but collected her 10th loss in the process, moving her record to 7-10. Over her seven innings of work, she allowed five runs, four earned, with 13 hits and two strikeouts.
Â
Junior centerfielder
Brittnee Rossi was one of five 'Bows to pick up a hit on the night, but Rossi continues to set the pace at the top of the lineup with her team-leading 29th hit of the season.
Â
For the Aggies, starting pitcher Kenedi Brown led the squad, improving her record to 12-11 on the year with a complete-game shutout, her 18th complete game of the season. She allowed five hits on the night and not a single extra-base hit.
Â
The 'Bows and Aggies will conclude their final series of the season with a doubleheader on Friday. The first of two will start with the first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m., following the doubleheader, head coach
Bob Coolen and staff will honor the seven seniors for their contributions to the program.
