HONOLULU— The University of Hawai'i softball team put an end to its 2021 campaign by splitting a doubleheader with UC Davis Friday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Â
The Rainbow Wahine (12-19, 11-13) dropped the series to UCD, losing their third consecutive conference series after starting the season, winning four of the first five series against the Big West. The Aggies (19-25, 13-11) finished the conference regular season with a winning record and claimed their first series win since mid-April.
Â
After the game, head coach Coolen and staff honored seniors
Laakea Bertulfo,
Dominique Martinez,
Emily Klee,
Samantha Thomas, Angelique "Cheeks" Ramos, Merilis "Mama" Rivera, and
Bree Soma. All seven impacted the program in various ways. Ramos ended her career with the best statistical numbers, hitting above .280 for her career while slugging 16 home runs.
Game 1
Â
UH snapped a nine-game losing streak with a convincing 8-2 win in the first game of the day, as junior starting pitcher
Ashley Murphy notched her sixth complete game of the season.
Â
The Aggies pushed two runs across in the first, but that was all Murphy and the UH defense would give up, setting the stage for the 'Bows' offense to awaken. UH took the lead in the third, 3-2, as both sophomore first baseman
Dallas Millwood and freshman utility player
Maya Nakamura recorded RBI singles.
Â
The fifth is when the 'Bows blew it open, scoring five runs, including another RBI single from Millwood and freshman catcher
Mya'Liah Bethea adding in on the fun with a run-scoring single of her own.
Â
Murphy took care of the rest, leading to the 8-2 victory as she allowed two runs, one earned, and struck out three batters. The victory moved her final record to 4-7 on the year.
Â
Millwood led the offense by going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and accounted for her fourth multi-hit game of the season.
Â
Game 2
Â
The second game of the night went to the visiting Aggies in extra innings with a final of 5-2.
Â
The first five innings were a pitcher duel between freshman pitchers as
Jetta Nannen and Kenedi Brown went pitch for pitch holding the opposition scoreless. But the scoreless drought ended in the top of the 6th with a two-run homer to dead center field from Sarah Starks, putting the Aggies on the scoreboard at 2-0.
Â
It didn't take long for UH to answer as junior shortstop
Nawai Kaupe had a flare for the dramatic, sending a two-run rocket over the centerfield wall for her team-leading sixth long ball of the season tying the game at 2-2.
Â
The two squads played two more scoreless innings, forcing extra innings until the Aggies put up three runs in the ninth off of senior pitcher
Emily Klee, giving them a 5-2 lead and the eventual final.
Â
Kaupe finished the game going 2-for-3 to lead the offense, while junior center fielder
Brittnee Rossi, Ramos, and Thomas collected hits. Nannen went five, and a third innings, allowing just two earned runs.Â
