Four freshmen lead the University of Hawai'i track and field team to the Big West Championships May 13-15. Sprinters
Alyssa Mae Antolin,
Nova Waters and
Tierra Sydnor, along with thrower
Hallee Layman both have top 10 marks in the conference and will look to lead the Rainbow Wahine in points scored in Irvine, Calif.
"The team is looking forward to the opportunity to represent Hawai'i at the Championships," Hawai'i head coach
Tim Boyce said. "Everyone has worked hard and those competing will represent everyone on the squad who had persevered through the past 14 months of unprecedented challenges."
Antolin, who carries two top 10 marks in two sprint events with the conference's fifth-fastest 200-meter dash time (24.76 seconds) and the ninth-fastest 100-meter dash time (12.28).
Layman, who has held a top 10 mark in the discus since the first meet of the season, set another personal record in the last meet at Oregon State with a 48.95-meter throw, which is the best mark among freshmen in the conference and the 18th-best freshman mark in the west qualifying ranks.
Waters also holds a top 10 mark in the conference as a freshman. Waters' 1:03.49 in the 400-meter hurdles is the eighth-fastest in the Big West this year and is the third-fastest among freshmen.
Another freshman sprinter leading the Wahine, Sydnor, ranks 10th in the conference in the 400-meter dash. Sydnor's 57.98 time at Oregon State sneaks her into the top 10 heading into the conference championships.
Sophomore
Sophia Morgan's 11:40.83 time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase is amongst the conference best times, currently ranking sixth in the Big West.
The four underclassmen will headline the Wahine travel party of 19 student-athletes with the 'Bows looking to improve on the 2019 team's 37 points scored at the Big West Championships.
