Ramos and Millwood Go Deep in Doubleheader Loss to LBSU

HONOLULU-- For the first time this season, the University of Hawai'i softball team suffered a sweep to a Big West Conference opponent on Saturday, dropping both games of a doubleheader to Long Beach State at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Rainbow Wahine (11-13, 10-9) stay in the top four of the Big West Conference standings but fall to the No. 4 spot behind UC Davis. The Beach (27-6, 20-2) have won six in a row and remain within striking distance of the first-place position of the conference, with one Big West series remaining on their schedule.

UH will be back in action on Friday with a visit to conference-leading Cal State Fullerton. The Titans are currently undefeated against the conference and are in a battle with LBSU, who trail the top seed by two games.

Game 1

The first inning put the Rainbow Wahine in a deep hole as freshman Jetta Nannen, and the senior combo of Emily Klee and Dominique Martinez gave up a combined 13 runs in the eventual 17-9 loss.

As the game progressed, UH chipped away at the lead combining for nine runs over five innings, including senior third baseman Angelique "Cheeks" Ramos slugging her third home run of the season in the third inning. The big blast came off the bat of sophomore first baseman Dallas Millwood an inning later when she cranked her first homer as a 'Bow for a grand slam. Millwood and junior outfielder Mikaela Gandia-Mak each finished with multi-hit games as Millwood went 3-for-4 along with four RBIs and Gandia-Mak went 2-for-3.

Outside of the first inning, the 'Bows' pitching calmed the Beach's offense attack as junior Isabella 'Izzy' Dino pitched the remainder of the game. Appearing in only her second game of the season, the North Vancouver, British Columbia native, threw for four and two-third innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits.

Game 2

The same formula of success was used by the Beach in the fourth and final game of the series as the offense accounted for 18 hits in a 15-3 final.

UH gave up four runs in the first, followed by a six-spot in the third and a five more in the fourth. On the flip side, Samantha Fowler kept the 'Bows guessing for the second time in the series, allowing six hits in five innings of work and striking out nine. Compared to her seven-inning and 12 strike-out performance the night before.

The 'Bows were able to make a few dents against Fowler, with the first coming in the fourth inning. Millwood doubled to right field after a walk to junior shortstop Nawai Kaupe, putting runners at second and third for freshman catcher Mya'liah Bethea. She answered with a single past the third baseman driving in Kaupe for her fourth RBI of the season. In the fifth, freshman utility player Cira Bartolotti sent her first career long ball over the wall in left field, followed by Ramos hitting her second home run of the day in the next at-bat, tying her with Kaupe for the team lead with four.

Repeating a similar scenario from the first game of the day, Dino entered out of the bullpen in the third inning to replace junior starter, Ashley Murphy. Dino allowed five unearned runs over two and a third inning of work, while Murphy suffered the loss giving up 10 runs, nine earned over two and two-third innings.
