FULLERTON, CALIF.— The University of Hawai'i softball team came up short in both games of a doubleheader with Big West Conference-leading Cal State Fullerton Friday afternoon at Anderson Family Field.
The Rainbow Wahine (11-15, 10-10) have dropped six a row, all six against the top two teams of the conference in Long Beach State and CSF. Previously UH had won each series with a conference opponent, the only exception coming against UC San Diego in a series split. The Titans (36-12, 20-0) remain undefeated against conference foes and have won nine in a row while winning 14 in a row against the 'Bows dating back to 2015.
UH will wrap up the series and conclude their final road trip of the season with a doubleheader against CSF on Saturday. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. HT.
Game 1
It didn't take long for the Titans to get on the board as the defending champs from 2019 put up a three-spot in the first against freshman pitcher
Jetta Nannen. After the early hiccup, Nannen settled in for a complete game effort, throwing four scoreless before CSF added two in the sixth for the 5-0 final.
Nannen gave up 12 hits and struck out one in six innings of work while sticking to her method of success, forcing eight flyouts to the top offense in the conference.
Offensively junior centerfielder
Brittnee Rossi continues to set the pace for the 'Bows as she recorded her sixth multi-hit game of the year, going 2-for-3 against Titans' ace Sophie Frost. Joining Rossi was senior Merilis "Mama" Rivera as she picked up her first multi-hit game of the season.
Game 2
UH had the chance to bounce back with a late-inning rally, but defensive miscues added up as the Titans played add-on in the sixth, putting an end to the effort for an 11-3 final.
Junior pitcher
Ashley Murphy repeated nearly the same opening inning as Nannen giving up two runs in the first frame, as UH trailed 2-0 after one. The Titans' offense added two more in the second for a 4-0 advantage, but sophomore first baseman
Dallas Millwood answered in the fifth. The Mililani native smacked her second long ball of the season for a solo shot to right-centerfield, pulling UH to a 4-1 deficit.
CSF added another run in the bottom half of the inning as they rolled in the sixth up 5-1. Following a walk to senior third baseman Angelique "Cheeks" Ramos, junior shortstop
Nawai Kaupe slugged her team leading fifth home run to left-center field, bringing UH closer at 5-3. The two-run homer also gave Kaupe 19 runs batted on the season for another team-high.
The Titans followed up the effort by the green and white by capitalizing on defensive mistakes for six runs in the sixth, putting an end to the game.
The 'Bows collected three hits in the game, two being homers, while the other being a single from freshman catcher
Mya'Liah Bethea. Murphy pitched five innings and struck out two and was saddled with the loss, moving her record on the season to 3-6.
