The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team eyes the end of their 2021 regular season with a Big West Conference showdown against UC Davis Saturday, April 10 at 10:00 a.m. HT at the Marya Welch Tennis Center in Davis, Calif.
The Rainbow Warriors (3-3, 2-3 Big West) will head to California after sweeping UC San Diego this past Monday, 7-0, in their final home match of the season. Breaking a three-match losing streak, Hawai'i took points on all singles and doubles courts with Simao Telo Alves finishing the match with a third set super-tiebreaker victory.
While the 'Bows have played five Big West matches thus far, UCD will be playing only its third conference match of the season. UH has won the past two dual matches over the Aggies by slim margins, both by 4-3 scores in 2018 and 2019. Davis is currently 6-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play and will host Cal Poly on Friday before Saturday's home finale with Hawai'i.
Axel Labrunie currently leads the Warriors in singles wins on No. 4 with a 5-1 mark, while
Andre Ilagan and
Lucas Labrunie have found success as a doubles team playing on the No. 1 court this season and leading the Warriors with a 4-1 record. Ilagan is the reining Big West Athlete of the Week by virtue of a win over nationally-ranked Bjorn Hoffman of UC Irvine.
Hawai'i leads the series with Davis, 8-5 with the programs first playing each other in 2004.
Following the UCD match, UH will return to Honolulu to prepare for the Big West Championship, April 30-May 2 in Irvine, Calif.
