Rainbow Wahine Suffer Setback to Long Beach State

Honolulu – The University of Hawai'i softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader with Long Beach State University Friday evening at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The longball was a critical factor in the evening's games as The Beach (24-6, 18-2) hit seven home runs across both contests, including two grand slams. It was highlighted by infielder Alyssa Gonzalez hitting three long balls of her own.

The Rainbow Wahine (11-11, 10-7) could not get the runs across in either game today, stranding 10 base runners. Game two was marked by a complete game gem tossed by LBSU's Samantha Fowler. The two Big West Conference rivals will conclude the series with another doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 2 p.m. HT.

Game 1
LBSU struck early to take game one in a five-inning affair over the Rainbow Wahine, 10-2. Kellie White picked up her 12th win of the season and 11th complete game, giving up one earned on five hits and struck out two.

The Beach got the second inning started quickly, with Breezy Wise hitting a solo shot. LBSU managed to load the bases after, where Maomi Hernandez launched a grand slam. After another single, Gonzales stepped in and hit another two-run home run to extend the lead to 7-0.

Freshman pitcher Jetta Nannen gave up seven runs on seven hits in two innings of work. The Bows' manufactured a couple of runs in the middle innings, but it would not be enough. Nawai Kaupe went 2-for-2 and accounted for one of the two runs. Merilis "Mama" Rivera helped the offense by going 1-for-2 at the plate with a double.

Junior pitcher Isabella "Izzy" Dino made her first appearance of the season in relief, throwing one and a third innings giving up one hit and one earned run.

Game 2
LBSU racked up the hits, home runs, and strikeouts to take the second game of the evening 8-1.

Pitcher Samantha Fowler struck out 12 in seven innings of work and gave up one run on five hits. Senior left fielder Bree Soma was one of the few 'Bows to make an impact against Fowler's pitching, going 2-for-3.

After scoring three runs over the first six innings, LBSU's Alyssa Gonzalez got the seventh inning started with a solo shot. Beach managed to load the bases before Justine Briones hit the second grand slam of the day to give Long Beach an 8-0 lead.

Junior pitcher Ashley Murphy had six strong innings before she found trouble in the seventh, giving up five runs. Junior center fielder Brittnee Rossi drove in Rivera for the game's only run in the seventh inning for the 8-1 final.
