Wils and Burman Set to Compete at European Championships

HONOLULU—The month of May will be a busy one in the swimming and dive community on the national and international level as the world prepares for the Olympics games in August. Two student-athletes from the University of Hawai'i swim and dive team will be busy as they'll have the chance to compete at the European Championships in Hungary.

Sophomore Daphne Wils will represent her home country of the Netherlands as a member of the Dutch national team, marking the third time she will compete in the championships. Previously she debuted in 2017 and made her second appearance in 2019. During her first appearance, Wils competed in three events, including a third-place finish in the women's 3-meter synchronized event with partner Inge Jansen. Two years later, she placed ninth overall in her only event, the 1-meter springboard event, ranking as high as No. 4 in the standings of the preliminaries.

In her third appearance, Wils will repeat the same format from 2017 and appear in three events, including the 1-meter, 3-meter, and mixed synchronized dives. The Dutch team will feature six divers on the roster with Edwin Jongejans serving as the squad's head coach .

Joining Wils will be junior Max Burman as he'll be representing his home country of Sweden. For Burman, this will be his first career appearance in the European Championships as he'll compete in the 1-meter and 3-meter events. He'll be a part of a team of five divers that will be anchored by head coach Brian Bungum.

Both Wils and Burman are coming off impressive seasons at UH, as they each were award MPSF diver of the year honors. The second consecutive yearly honor for Wils and Burman made history by becoming the only athlete in conference history to be freshman of the year and, later in their career, diver of the year.

The European Championships will be underway beginning on May 10th and extend to May 23rd at Dunabe Arena in Budapest. All diving events will take place from the 10th to the 16th.
