REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – In their first competition in more than a year, the University of Hawai'i coed and women's sailing squads each placed third in the PCCSC Championships Saturday in Northern California.
For the first time ever, both the coed and women's championship were held on the same day. The coed event was held first as six races were sailed in shifty conditions on the Redwood City Creek with the wind slow to fill. Host Stanford took the regatta with a low of 37 points, followed by UC Santa Barbara (41), Hawaii (57) and UC San Diego (81). Both Stanford and UC Santa Barbara earned automatic berths to the ICSA nationals.
Sailing for the Rainbows in the A division was skippers
Bastien Rasse and crew
Devon Stapleton.
Trey Summers,
Chloe Long,
Owen Lahr,
Frances Tarpey-Schwed and
Samuel Patton competed in the B division.
The women's event followed in the late afternoon with more consistent breeze. A beautiful 12 to 18 knots came in from the northwest as the clouds rolled in over the mountains and the temperature dropped. The women's results mirrored the coed: Stanford finished first (32 points) after eight races sailed with UCSB in second (69), UH in third (76) and UCSD in fourth (111). Stanford and UCSB gained the conference's automatic berths to the women's nationals
Hayden Lahr and
Jemma Baird competed for UH in the A division, while
Katherine Shofran and
Devon Stapleton sailed in the B division.
The Rainbows will be back in the water tomorrow for the third an fianl event of the weekend, the PCCSC Team Race Championship.
