Parapunov Wins Third AVCA Player of the Week Award

In what has become a weekly honor, University of Hawai'i senior opposite Rado Parapunov was named both the AVCA and Big West Conference Player of the Week after helping the Rainbow Warriors to an undefeated regular season.

The Sofia, Bulgaria native, who also swept both awards last week, collected his third AVCA award this season – and fifth overall, which is one shy of Costas Theocharidis' school-record six national awards. In winning his fifth Big West award this season, Parapunov added to his conference-record 15 of his career.

On Monday, the senior was selected to the all-Big West first team for the third consecutive year and is the frontrunner to repeat as Player of the Year, which will be announced next week

Parapunov averaged 4.75 kills per set on .423 hitting in a pair of wins over UC Irvine last week that clinched Hawai'i's perfect regular season and conference schedule. In Friday's five-set win, the tallied a match-high 25 kills, 22 of which occurred in the final three sets. He had nine of the team's 11 kills in the fifth set alone and did not commit an error in 12 attempts. In Saturday's series finale, he recorded a team-high 13 kills and served all five of his aces during a 7-0 scoring run in Set 3 that sealed the victory.

Parapunov's three national awards this season is the most by one player in a single season in AVCA history. The last time a player won the award in back-to-back weeks was BYU's Ben Patch  in 2013 (Feb. 26 and March 5).
