HONOLULU – Although the University of Hawai'i baseball team was no hitting CSU Bakersfield through six innings, the Rainbow Warriors (15-12, 7-10 Big West) fell to the Roadrunners (9-7, 6-3) 5-2 on Friday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium.
Sophomore
Aaron Davenport was no hitting the Roadrunners into the seventh inning, but fell victim to three hits in the seventh including a two-run home run which gave CSUB the 3-2 lead.
Bakersfield scored another run in the eighth inning on back-to-back hits and a safety squeeze.
Hawai'i struck first in the fourth inning. Center fielder
Adam Fogel got plunked with one out and first baseman
Alex Baeza triple to right center field on what looked like a highlight reel catch by the Bakersfield center fielder crashing into the wall. The ball squirted out of the defender's glove and Baeza kept sprinting around the bases before ending at third base.
A bloop single by catcher
Tyler Murray plated Hawai'i's second run. That was Hawai'i's third hit of the game and the 'Bows couldn't get a hit against a pesky Roadrunners defense until the ninth inning when Baeza stroked his second hit of the day.
CSUB had four or five web gem plays on defense to keep Hawai'i off the basepaths and the defense carried over to the offense after Davenport gave up his first hit as the 'Runners scored five unanswered runs in the late innings.
Freshman
Austin Teixeira will start for Hawai'i in the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday with
Cade Halemanu starting the second game. The doubleheader begins at 12 p.m. HT from Les Murakami Stadium.
