FLAGSTAFF, ARIZ.—Building off her second-place showing in the 1-meter from Monday, sophomore
Daphne Wils claimed a first-place finish in the 3-meter of the NCAA Zone E Championships for the University of Hawai'i diving team on Tuesday at the Northern Arizona University Aquatic and Tennis Complex.
Wils' final score tallied at 621.70, as she is now a back-to-back champion in the event, winning the 3-meter in 2020 as a freshman. Her day didn't start out the way she wanted, placing fifth after the prelims with a score of 299.05. But the reigning MPSF champion shot her way up the standings with a strong performance in the championship round, averaging a round score of 53.78.
Due to Wils' performances over the last two days, she has qualified for both the 1-meter and 3-meter events at the NCAA Championships beginning on March 17th.
On top of Wils' big day, freshman
Zach Lundgren notched a significant milestone as he qualified for his first NCAA championship appearance after finishing fifth overall in the platform dive. His final score landed at 577.45, jumping from seventh to fifth, following his prelim performance of 270.90.
With one day left to go at the Zone event, UH has three divers ready to perform on the national stage, with junior
Max Burman qualifying in the 3-meter on Monday. On Wednesday, head coach
Mike Brown and associate head coach
Anita Rossing will be looking to add another diver to the group, with the women competing in the platform and the men wrapping up the event with the one-meter.
