FLAGSTAFF, ARIZ.— The NCAA championships' journey will continue for the University of Hawai'i diving team as six student-athletes will compete in NCAA Zone E Diving Championships, beginning on Monday at Northern Arizona University.
In limited events throughout the 2020-21 season, head coach
Mike Brown and associate head coach
Anita Rossing continue to produce some of the best divers in the western part of the U.S. and the nation. Exiting the MPSF Championships two and a half weeks ago, sophomore
Daphne Wils on the women's side, along with junior
Max Burman and freshman
Mason Williams on the men's team, qualified for the zone championships. But now, they'll be joined by freshmen
Elma Lund and
Zach Lundgren, and junior
Timothy Newton.
Wils and Lund will compete against 28 other divers, while Burman, Williams, Lundgren, and Newton will go against a field of 20. For the women, divers who finish in the top-12 for one-meter and top-nine for three-meter and platform will automatically qualify for the NCAAs. But for the men, divers finishing in the top four spots of the one-meter, top seven of the of the three-meter, and top six of the platform will receive automatic spots. If a divers takes a qualifying spot in one event, then it is enough for them to get a spot if they place in the top 12 in any other event at the meet.
This year's Zone E Championships begin with one-meter on Monday, followed by three-meter on Tuesday and platform on Wednesday for the women. While for the men it'll be three-meter on Monday, platform on Tuesday, and finishing with the one-meter on Wednesday. Prelims begin at 8:30 a.m. HT each day, with finals to follow in the late morning and early afternoon.
