HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine basketball team concluded its regular season with a 54-46 loss to UC Davis Saturday night at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 8-7 overall and finished Big West play at 7-6.
With Saturday's results, UH is slated as the No. 5 seed in next week's Big West Championships in Las Vegas. The Rainbow Wahine will open the tournament against No. 4 seed CSU Bakersfield in a quarterfinal match-up on Wednesday, March 10 at 2:00 p.m. PT/12:00 p.m. HT.
UC Davis (10-2, 9-1 Big West) meanwhile claimed the conference title and the top-seed in next week's tournament. The Aggies limited UH to just 26 percent shooting and a season-low in points to avenge Friday's double-digit loss to the Rainbow Wahine.
Oliva Davis (13 points, nine rebounds) and
Amy Atwell (11 points, nine rebounds) each flirted with a double-double while
Kasey Neubert added 12 points, but it wasn't enough.
UH spotted a determined Aggie squad the first eight points of the game. But UH didn't back down and battled back to take a halftime lead. A Neubert reverse layup in the waning seconds gave UH a 29-27 advantage at the break.
But the game turned after halftime as the Aggies exploded on a 12-1 run to start the second half. The decisive run gave UC Davis a lead they would not relinquish. UH lost despite out-rebounding the Aggies 46-34 and out-scoring them 15-1 on second-chance points.
The game marked the final home appearance for seniors
Jadynn Alexander and
Barbara Rangel. Fellow senior
Amy Atwell has declared her intention to return for another season.
