HONOLULU—The Univesity of Hawai'i softball team dropped its regular-season opener to No. 8 University of Washington Thursday evening at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The Rainbow Wahine (0-1) previously kicked off back-to-back season openers with wins, but the loss to UW, marked the first loss in game one since 2018. The Huskies (14-2) continue their hot start winning eight of their last nine, including four straight wins via the shutout.
Ace Gabbie Plain added to her spotless record of 8-0 with a strong five innings for UW. UH battled at the plate but could only pick up one hit on the evening. Junior pinch hitter
Mikaela Gandia-Mak smoked a single up the middle in the top of the fifth, breaking up the perfect game bid.
Freshman
Jetta Nannen pitched her way out of trouble early, allowing only one run in both the second and third innings during bases-loaded situations. UW wore down the upstart pitcher in the fourth, plating four runs in the fourth, with two more in the fifth.
UH will be back in action with game two against the Huskies on Friday at 6 p.m. HT.
