GREENSBORO, N. C.—For the second consecutive day, University of Hawai'i sophomore
Daphne Wils showed progress in her first career appearance of the NCAA women's diving championship at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
On Thursday, Wils finished in the middle of the pack at No. 33 of the 1-meter event. On Friday, her stock rose even further, placing at No. 20 overall in the 3-meter. She accumulated a final score of 295.80 over her six prelim dives. It was a strong start for Wils as she registered a 54.00 on a back 2 ½ somersault pike in her first dive, placing her at No. 9 overall.
Following Wils' strong start, she registered a balk on her second dive during an attempt on a reverse 2 ½ somersault pike for a score of 31.50, ranking her at No. 43 in the second round. Her remaining four dives resulted in playing catch up and gradually moving back up the standings, including her highest score of the day on her fifth dive. Wils completed an inward 2 ½ somersault tuck for a score of 56.70.
For the first time in her career, Sarah Bacon from the University of Minnesota claimed the 3-meter championship with a score of 408.60. Bacon won the 1-meter championship on Thursday.
Friday's event marks the end of the season for Wils, but on the third and final day of diving freshman,
Elma Lund will go for UH in the platform event. Same as Wils, 2021 marks the first appearance for Lund in the NCAA Championships.
