Men’s Volleyball Earns Top Spot In AVCA Coaches Poll

The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team ascended to the top spot in this week's AVCA Coaches Top 15 poll, leapfrogging previous No. 1 BYU, who dropped to No. 2 this week.

The Rainbow Warriors (4-0) received 15 of the 16 first place votes and 239 total points. BYU received the other first place vote and is No. 2 followed by No. 3 Pepperdine, No. 4 UC Santa Barbara, and No. 5 Lewis. UH also holds the No. 1 ranking in the Off the Block Media Poll, which the Warriors either held outright or shared the top spot for the past three weeks.

UH successfully opened its season by winning all four matches on the road last week including consecutive two-match series sweeps of UC Irvine and UC San Diego. The Warriors are off this week and will return to the competition with a pivotal three-match series at UCSB in Santa Barbara, Calif., beginning March 11. The first two matches of that series count toward the Big West standings.

Last season, Hawai'i was the AVCA's No. 1-ranked team for the first eight weeks before splitting a two-match series with then-No. 2 BYU. The teams flip-flopped in the rankings in what became the year's final poll after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the season.
