WAIMEA, Hawai'i – The second round of the Amer Ari Intercollegiate proved to be a challenge for the University of Hawai'i men's golf team as they battled blistery conditions which reached Hawai'i Island midday Wednesday.
The Rainbow Warriors dropped 22 strokes from their first round score while freshman
Isaiah Kanno, who shot an opening round 67, fell back into a tie for 32
nd place. UH sits in seventh place at 626 with a second round 324.
Arizona State (-26, 550) matched its first round score with a 275 on Wednesday and leads the tournament by eight strokes over USC, who shot 278. Georgia Tech (574) is in third followed by Oregon State (575) and San Jose State (576).
ASU's Blake Wagoner carded a 1-under 71 and is 10-under for the tournament. Teammate David Puig is one stroke back after a second round 68. Only 11 golfers shot under par as strong winds picked up at the Hāpuna Golf Course.
Kanno, who opened with a 5-under 67, was most affected by the conditions and finished with an 85. The freshman from Hilo, Hawai'i, got to 4-under for his round and 9-under for the tourney after the eighth hole before the winds kicked in putting him in a tie for 32
nd when his round was over.
Sophomore
Kotaro Murata had the best round of the day for UH with a 5-over 77 and is tied for 34
th at 153. A pair of Warriors –
Kanata Irei (83) and
Justin Ngan (82) – are three strokes back at 156 and a tie for 38
th.
Justin Arcano (82) and
Cole Yoshida (84) are 44
th and 47
th, respectively.
AJ Teraoka (89, 175) and
Matt Lloyd (88, 177) are competing as individuals.
The third and final round is scheduled for Wednesday with an 8:00 a.m. start.
