Box Score LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team faced strong opposition in its first match of the season, falling to 16^th-ranked USC Thursday afternoon at the Marks Stadium. 
 
The match began with doubles, as UH's Michelle Pits and Madison Kim lost to USC's Summer Dvorak and Danielle Wilson on the No. 3 court, 6-3. Likewise, Hawai'i's No. 1 duo of Petra Melounova and Alexis Merrill finished second with a defeat handed by USC's 48^th-ranked Eryn Cayetano and Naomi Cheong, 6-3. The doubles matches ended with Nikola Dolakova and Satsuki Takamura falling to Salma Ewing and Clare McKee, 6-3. The Trojans (4-2) secured the doubles point for an early 1-0 lead in the dual match. 
 
Singles also proved to be tough for the Rainbow Wahine as the Trojans secured all but one of the six matches. UH's lone win came at the No. 5 court from Markovic in a three-set battle against McKee, 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (4). Takamura also sent her match at No. 3 to three sets before Wilson closed it out, 6-7 (8), 7-6 (4), 1-0 (6).
 
Kim dropped her match to Dvorak on the No. 4 court, 6-0, 6-2. In a similar fashion, Dolakova fell to Ewing securing USC's second singles win, 6-1, 6-0. USC's Constance Branstine knocked off Pits on the No. 6 court, 7-5, 6-2. UH's No. 1 Melounova was defeated by Cayetano, 7-6 (5), 7-5. 
 
The Rainbow Wahine will continue their SoCal road trip on Friday, Feb. 19 against Big West rival UC Irvine and will finish with San Diego on Tuesday, Feb. 22.
