  NEWS & NOTES

  • UH is coming off their second consecutive home tournament by going 1-2 in the Rainbow Wahine Showdown. The 'Bows picked up a win against Eastern Illinois but fell to Utah and Gonzaga over the three-day tournament.
  • Following her back-to-back stellar performances the week before against Portland and Portland, where she dropped 59 points, Amy Atwell scored a combined 42 points in the showdown. In two of the three games, Atwell scored a team-high 16 points, one in a win against EIU, the other coming in a loss against Gonzaga.
  • Heading into the match-up with the Lions, Atwell leads UH in scoring at 16.9 points per game and has scored double-digits in five consecutive games. Her current stretch of scoring output is the best of her career. During the 2020-2021 season, she scored double-digits in four straight games (Feb. 26- Mar.6), and the year prior, in 2019-2020, she had two stretches of three consecutive games with double-digit scoring (Nov. 11- Nov. 29 & Jan. 30- Feb. 6).
  • The first seven games have put UH against some tough opponents, leading to their 2-5 record, but the combined record of those opponents currently sits at 29-16 with a .644 win percentage. Three of those teams, Portland, Utah, and Gonzaga, only have one loss on the season. The only other team in the conference with a similar opponent nonconference schedule to this point is CSUN sitting at 2-3, with a combined opponent record of 19-11 with a .633 win percentage.
  • During her first season, forward Nnenna Orji averaged 13 minutes of action with three points and three rebounds per game. Her production is up, but her last three games are eye-opening. For the first time in her career, Orji started a game and recorded her first-career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds against EIU. She followed up by posting two more 10 point games.
  • In the season opener against San Diego, guard Daejah Phillips scored 20 points showing what her second season could be for the team. She suffered a setback, missing games against Portland and Portland State, but she came and played in all three games of the showdown this past weekend. Phillips scored a team-high 19 points in the tournament's second game against Utah.
GOOD TO SEE YOU LMU
The 'Bows and LMU have had some battles over the year, and their history goes way back. During the 1982-1983 season, when UH picked up the program's first-ever postseason bid with an appearance in the WNIT, UH and LMU played three straight times from January 11th to January 25th. UH won the first eight meetings against the Lions from 1983 to 2002, before LMU picked up back-to-back wins in the series in 2006 and 2008. The overall record between the two goes to the 'Bows at 10-3, with their last meeting coming on November 13th, 2019, in a loss to at LMU, 65-51. Two players from the 2019 team remain with UH today in Nae Nae Calhoun and Amy Atwell. Both started as Calhoun played 36 minutes, picking up six points, five rebounds, and four assists. While Atwell recorded one of the worst games of her career, playing six minutes, drawing four fouls and no points.

PURSUIT OF HISTORY
Atwell continues to be the team's top shooting threat at 16.9 points per game. She most recently moved into a tie at the No. 2 spot of the all-time three-pointers made list with Ashleigh Karaitiana at 143 and is pacing towards the top spot. Megan Tinnin, the all-time leader in made threes, sits at 167. Atwell will need to average over one three-pointer a game over the remaining 22 scheduled for the year to break the record. This season, she is also the only student-athlete on the roster who has a chance at 1,000 career points, with 854. To reach the milestone, she needs to average 6.6 points per game for the rest of the season.
