  NEWS & NOTES

  • The Rainbow Wahine are coming off a stretch where they haven't played a game in 16 days. The long layoff is a rarity in the college basketball schedule, but it's not the longest of the Laura Beeman era at UH. In coach Beeman's first season at UH in 2012-2013, the 'Bows went 18 days, followed by another 10 days between games.
  • UH last played on December 5th at SimpliFi Arena in a 76-63 win over Loyola Marymount. The victory was the 'Bows' third over their last five games and ended a six-game home stretch spanning 16 days on the island of 'Oahu.
  • Graduate forward Amy Atwell scorched the visiting Lions for 24 points, claiming her third game this season of scoring 20 points and more. When Atwell crosses the 20 point threshold, UH is 2-1 on the year. The lone loss was against Portland, as Atwell dropped a career-high 30 points.
  • A critical factor in the win over LMU was the production of sophomore point guard Nae Nae Calhoun. The Riverside, California native was lost last season due to an injury but has returned this season, starting all eight games, averaging 26 minutes of action. Against the Lions, she accounted for 12 points, six assists, and four rebounds. In the fourth quarter alone, following a push by LMU to take a two-point lead, Calhoun scored nine points and dished out four assists, putting UH in the win column.
  • In eight games this season, head coach Laura Beeman has used four different starting lineups, reasons varying from productivity to injury-related. The current projected lineup against UNLV with Atwell, Calhoun and the freshmen trio of Daejah Phillips, Meilani McBee, and Nnenna Orji are 1-0 on the season.
  • The rivalry between UH and UNLV is extensive and held more meaning years ago when the Runnin' Rebels were a part of the Big West Conference. The two programs played each other a minimum of twice a year from 1980 to 1998, but have played on and off from 1999 to the current year for a total of six times. UNLV holds the advantage in the series by a 32-16 margin, but UH won the last head-to-head encounter back on December 19th of 2018, in a 66-61 overtime effort. Between the two teams, two players remain on the roster from the game. Atwell, who played five minutes in the game with no points, and Justice Ethridge from UNLV accounted for 30 minutes and nine points.

GET HEALTHY AND BE READY
Injuries play a role with every team, but the injury bug has hit UH hard to start the 2021-2022 campaign. Graduate transfer and starting center Kallin Spiller started the first four games of the season, averaging 13 points and seven rebounds a game, but has missed the last four due to a nagging injury. Freshman forward Jacque David had an impressive debut against USC where she scored eight points, featuring her long-range ability with two three-pointers, but has missed the last five games due to injury. While both look to return to action this season, sophomore transfer guard Ashley Thoms aims to make her season debut over the three-game road trip. Thoms played in 35 games at Weber State, where she averaged two points, an assist, and 14 minutes per game over a season and a half. She has been ineligible to this point due to transfer rules.

PURSUIT OF HISTORY
Atwell continues to be the team's top shooting threat at 17.8 points per game. She most recently moved into a tie at the No. 2 spot of the all-time three-pointers made list with Ashleigh Karaitiana at 146 and is pacing towards the top spot. Megan Tinnin, the all-time leader in made threes, sits at 167. Atwell will need to average one three-pointer a game over the remaining 21 scheduled for the year to break the record. This season, she is also the only student-athlete on the roster who has a chance at 1,000 career points, with 878. To reach the milestone, she needs to average 5.8 points per game for the rest of the season.
