WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – University of Hawai'i sophomore
Matthew Shipley is among 20 semifinalists for the 2021 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl.
The Liberty Hill, Texas native is 11-of-12 in field goals this season including current streak of 10 consecutive made attempts. Shipley, who set a new career-high with a 49-yard field goal in last week's loss to Utah State, is 4-of-5 from 40+ yards this season with his only miss a 48-yard attempt in the season-opener against UCLA. He is also a perfect 30-for-30 in PAT attempts.
Shipley is one of five kickers from the Mountain West along with Colorado State's Cayden Camper, Boise State's Jonah Dalmas, UNLV's Daniel Gutierrez, and Nevada's Brandon Talton.
The sophomore is UH's first semifinalist since Jason Elam, who became a finalist in 1992.
The list of semifinalists will be trimmed to three finalists on Nov. 23. The winner will be announced during the Home Depot College Football Awards show on Dec. 9.
The award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954.
