HONOLULU—The Big West Conference unveiled their yearly soccer awards on Wednesday as three student-athletes from the University of Hawai'i received honors for their play in 2021.
Sophomores
Eliza Ammendolia and
Kelci Sumida were selected to the All-Big West Second Team, while junior defender
Natalie Daub claimed honorable mentions. The tandem of Ammendolia and Sumida proved to be the top offensive threats for the Rainbow Wahine as each led UH in two notable categories.
Ammendolia registered a team-high three assists in 14 matches and picked up two goals. The 2021 campaign marks the second consecutive season she led UH in assists, as she did the same in 2019 when she was on the conference first team. Sumida notched a team-high five goals for UH and drew the attention of every opponent UH faced this season, resulting in double teams and limiting her chances but capitalizing in big moments. Outside of the goalkeeper position, Sumida led the team in minutes played with 1143.
The honorable mention for Daub marks the first conference honor for her career. She was one of three players to tally over 1,000 minutes of action in 2021 and picked up one assist on the season. In a season where UH had to fight for every opportunity and stall every attack, Daub was a constant presence on the backline.
UH concluded its season with a 2-9-3 record overall and 2-5-2 in the conference, following a cancelation with UC San Diego on Sunday. The Big West Conference Championships will conclude later this week, with Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton facing off and UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine battling it out in the semifinals on Thursday. The two winners will play for the championship on Sunday.
