Hawai‘i Wraps Up First Day at SMU Invite

DALLAS, TEXAS.—The University of Hawai'i swim and dive team was back in the pool with the first of three days in the SMU Invite held at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium. 
 
The Rainbow Warriors tallied a score of 195, putting them at the third-place position after one day, as SMU leads the field with a score of 467. On the other side, the Rainbow Wahine are at No. 4 with a score of 174, and just like the men's team, the women's SMU squad leads, scoring a 362. 
 
The SMU Invite will continue into Friday, where UH will look to gain ground on the events' leaders. 
 
Swimming
Graduate student Anna Kotonen picked up the lone individual victory for the 'Bows in an A-Final, touching the wall at 22.47 in the 50 free. 
 
Kotonen was also a part of the 200 free relay team at the start position, with senior Kai Nabeta, junior Gabrielle Williams, and freshman Helena Djunic teaming up for a second-place finish. The group finished with a time of 1:31.67, narrowly beaten out by the SMU squad. 
 
On the men's side, freshman Milan Bukovics showed flashes of what he can do at a high level, recording two top finishes in a B-Final and the other in a C-Final. The first coming off the 100 fly as he finished with a time of 48.77 in the B-Final, and later in the 500 free, he recorded a time of 4:34.15 in the C-Final. 
 
In the form of relay finishes, senior Ian Venter, juniors Justin Lisoway and Timothy Gallagher, and freshmen Jordan Meacham placed third in the 400 medley. 
 
Diving
Sophomore Mason Williams had a strong finish in the three-meter event, placing third overall. After the prelims, Williams climbed from the No. 5 position to a top-three finish, with two significant dives.
 
In his first dive, a reverse 2 ½ somersault tuck, he picked up his biggest score of the day at 60.20, with a second-place finish in the early round dive. In his fifth dive, he scored a 58.50 with a back 2 ½ somersault pike, again placing second in the single round dive. Williams finished with a final score of 334.10.
 
For the Rainbow Wahine, the highest finish of the day came from freshman Nea Immonen in the one-meter. She dropped from second place down to fourth in the finals but featured what her future may hold. She secured the top spot on two dives, her reverse 1 ½ somersault pike and the forward 2 ½ somersault pike. Her reverse 1 ½ somersault pike scored the highest of the day at 51.60. Her final on the day ended with a 265.40 in the event.
