REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's sailing team concluded its fall season by finishing runner-up at the PCCSC Fall Women's Championships, Oct. 30-31, in Northern California.
The championships consisted of two events with fleet racing on Saturday and team racing on Sunday. The Rainbow Wahine finished runner-up on each day, while host Stanford claimed both regattas.
A total of five schools competed over the weekend. Sailing for the Rainbow Wahine were skippers
Mercy Tangredi,
Morgan Carew and
Hayden Lahr and crew
Kelsie Grant,
Sophia Schaeffer and
Jemma Baird.
On Saturday, the teams patiently waited for the wind which came in early afternoon. The breeze built and clocked left at 8-12 knots. In all, 20 races were completed—10 in each division. Stanford won comfortably with a regatta-low 89 points as UH placed second at 191.
The teams arrived to glassy conditions on Sunday for team racing with a light northerly breeze eventually building into a 12-knot westerly breeze. UH went 4-2 in round-robin, head-to-head action with its two losses to Stanford which finished with a spotless record on the day.
With its fall campaign in the books, the Rainbow Wahine look ahead to the spring and its opening event of 2022—the Peter Wenner Rainbow Invite, Jan. 15-16 , at Keehi Lagoon.
