Women's Volleyball Sweeps UC Riverside

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (14-6, 11-1 Big West) posted its second-straight sweep of the weekend, defeating UC Riverside, 25-19, 25-23, 25-16 on Saturday night at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

For the second straight match, senior outside hitter Brooke Van Sickle was on fire to lead UH with 14 kills for her 30th career double-digit kill match. She tallied a lofty, match-high .520 hitting percentage with just one error on 25 attacks. She put down six kills in both Set 1 and Set 2. After posting a UH career high of five service aces on Friday, Van Sickle dealt out four more aces on Saturday. For the second consecutive match, she also finished one dig shy of a double-double.

Sophomore outside hitter Riley Wagoner recorded her fourth double-figure kill match of the season with 13 kills while popping up five digs. Rookie setter Kate Lang posted her seventh double-double of her young career dishing out 37 assists with a team-high 10 digs. For the second-straight night, UH had a team hitting percentage over .300 as they hit .324 for the match.

At the net, Skyler Williams led UH with a match high four blocks and added four kills.

The 'Bows started off by taking an early 5-2 lead. UC Riverside kept things close early on and cut their deficit to one point at 7-6. But with Igiede serving, UH went on an eight point run—which included three-straight kills by Skyler Williams that forced UCR to call its first timeout. Two points later, the Highlanders called their last timeout of the set. UH led by eight points at the end of Igiede's serving run, 15-6. Late in the frame, UCR rallied to score seven straight points to close to within three points, forcing UH call their first timeout. Van Sickle who had subbed out right before UCR's streak started, re-entered to stop the streaking Highlanders and accounted for three of the last four UH points by kills.

The Highlanders took their momentum into the second set as there was 10 ties and four lead changes in the frame. After the score was knotted at 12-12, UH scored five of the next six points to go up, 17-13. But the 'Bows could not shake off UCR as they came right back to tie the score at 19-19. Hawai'i held off the scrappy Highlanders to take Set 2, 25-23 to take a 2-0 set lead.

Hawai'i got off to a better start in Set 3, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead. The Highlanders however quickly erased their deficit to tie the score at 6-6. The 'Bows responded by scoring the next eight of 10 points to take a 14-8 lead. The Rainbow Wahine pulled away to win Set 3, 25-16.
