Van Sickle Powers Hawai‘i Past Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (15-6, 12-1 Big West) overcame a slow start and got stronger as the match went on as the Rainbow Wahine swept Cal State Fullerton (9-12, 6-8 Big West), 25-23, 25-16, 25-14. Senior outside hitter Brooke Van Sickle powered UH past the Titans and was one of three Rainbow Wahine to record double-doubles in UH's third consecutive sweep on Friday night at Titan Gym in Fullerton, Calif.

With UH trailing by five points late in Set 1 at 21-16, Van Sickle put the 'Bows on her back as she pounded five consecutive kills to tie the score at 21-21. UH would end up taking Set 1, 25-23. Van Sickle put down a match high 16 kills and came up with 10 digs for her ninth double-double of the season and 15th of her career. It was the 14th time that she has led UH in kills this year. Hawai'i came back late to steal the Set 1. The Rainbow Wahine built an early 7-4 lead, but the Titans quickly erased that deficit and raced out to a five point lead fueled by an 11-to-3 run. UH closed the gap to just two points to trail at 18-16, but after a Titan timeout, Fullerton's lead ballooned back up by five points at 21-16. UH called their first timeout at that point. Coming out of the timeout, Hawai'i responded with Van Sickle reeling off four-straight kills to trim their deficit to one point which forced CSUF to call their second timeout. Hawai'i closed the set out on a 9-to-2 run. Van Sickle accounted for seven of those points with seven of her eight kills in the first set alone. The 'Bows took Set 1, 25-23.

UH and CSUF were tied 10 times with four lead changes to start the second set. After tying things at 13-13, Hawai'i was finally able to gain some traction as the 'Bows rolled on an 8-to-2 run to jump out to a 20-15 lead. Hawai'i won Set 2, 25-19.
