BAKERSFIELD, CALIF.— The University of Hawai'i soccer team picked up its second consecutive win in a 4-0 lopsided affair at CSU Bakersfield on Sunday evening.
The Rainbow Wahine (2-9-3, 2-5-2) had a winless streak of 14 matches snapped on Thursday with a win 2-1 victory over UC Davis, and now for the first time since mid-October of 2019, have won back-to-back contests. It also marks the first time since 2018 UH won back-to-back road matches. The Roadrunners (1-14-2, 0-7-1) remain at the bottom of the Big West Conference standings and have lost six straight.
The scoring onslaught by the 'Bows came from two contributors, senior forward
Maki Kono and sophomore midfielder
Eliza Ammendolia. Coming into the day, but registered one goal on the season, but in the final road match of the season, each registered two goals apiece.
The first came from Ammendolia in the eighth minute off her own rebound. After firing from the right side of the box, the ball bounced back to Ammendolia on the rebound, and she casually flipped the ball over the head of the goalkeeper in her second attempt, finding the back of the net.
Shortly after, in the 12th minute, Kono added to the lead with a right-footed corner kick from the right corner. She sent the ball high into the box, and as the keeper jumped to snag it out of the air, the ball slipped through her gloves and past the line. Giving UH a 2-0 cushion, but Kono wasn't done. In the 38th minute, she gathered a loose ball off a Roadrunner defender and sent a screamer to the right side of the net, far out of reach of the keep, to make a play on the ball. UH rode the momentum into the half up 3-0.
Not to be outdone, Ammendolia notched her second goal to match Kono in the 48th minute. Freshman forward
Nicole Ando collected a loose ball in the box and was able to get it out to Ammendolia at the top of the box, where she sent a slap shot to the left side of the goal making it 4-0. The assist by Ando marked the first of her career.
UH finished with an eye-popping 27-8 shot advantage, including a 13-2 margin in shots on goal.
UH will return home to the island of O'ahu for the final match of the season on October 31st. The 'Bows will host UC San Diego for Senior Day, where head coach
Michele Nagamine and staff will honor five student-athletes for their contributions to the program.
