HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team will travel to California to compete in the ITA Division I Southwest Regional Championship starting Thursday, Oct. 21 in San Diego. This will be the first road trip of the season for the Rainbow Wahine as a full squad.
The 'Bows started their fall schedule hosting HPU in the 'Anuenue Invite, the past two weekends. The team engaged in matches against HPU as well as intrasquad games. In doubles, UH's Madison Kim and Jessalyn Lopez defeated HPU's Marta Ruszczynska and Rikona Murakami. 8-3, while UH's Satsuki Tamamura and Talya Zandberg fell to HPU's Elodie Busson and Marleen Tilgner, 8-3.
In singles, Kim and UH's Alexis Merrill came away with wins against HPU's Ruszczynska, 6-3, 7-5, and Murakami, 6-1, 6-2, respectively. Zandberg proved tenacious in her single's game, taking Busson to three sets before giving in, 6-7 (9), 6-4, 6-2.
Hosted by the University of San Diego, the ITA Southwest Regional features some of the top men's and women's collegiate players from across the country. The Rainbow Wahine last competed in ITA Regionals in 2019, where former Rainbow Wahine Bojana Markovic made it to the semifinals of the main draw singles bracket.
The 'Bows will enter the tournament in bracket one from which they will compete to advance further.
