Four Warriors Picked Preseason OTB All-Americans

The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team led all schools with four members named to Off the Block's Preseason All-America teams announced on Monday. All four were picked to the 2020 AVCA All-America teams.

Opposite Rado Parapunov and libero Gage Worsley were named to the first team while outside hitter Colton Cowell and middle blocker Patrick Gasman were selected to the second team.

No. 1 BYU, No. 3 UC Santa Barbara and No. 5 Lewis each had three players named Preseason All-Americans. The voting committee for this preseason award was comprised of 20 NCAA Division I-II men's volleyball head coaches and men's volleyball media members from around the nation.

Parapunov, BYU opposite Gabi Garcia Fernandez, and Lewis middle attacker Tyler Mitchem finished in a three-way tie for the most votes in the Preseason All-American voting.

Parapunov, a two-time AVCA first-team All-American, ranked No. 2 nationally in kills per set (4.47), No. 3 in points per set (5.28), and No. 15 in hitting percentage (.377) in the abbreviated 2020 season. The Sofia, Bulgaria, native was also selected as the Big West Conference Player of the Year, winner of Off the Block's Nicolas Szerszen Award as the nation's best non-U.S. born player, and runner-up for the Bryan Ivie Award as the nation's best opposite. He reached double-digit kill totals 11 times and 20+ kills three times, including a 30-kill performance in UH's reverse sweep of BYU.

Worsley is one of the nation's premiere liberos and also a two-time AVCA first-team All-American. For the second year in a row, the Moraga, Calif., native was selected as Off the Block's Erik Shoji Award winner as the nation's best libero and also was the recipient of the inaugural Steve Shondell Award as the nation's best passer. In 2020, he ranked No. 18 nationally and No. 3 in the Big West in digs per set (2.10) with five matches of 10+ digs.

In 2020, Gasman became Big West's first three-time, first-team all-conference honoree. The Clovis, Calif., native ranked No. 7 nationally in blocks per set (1.20) and No. 14 in hitting percentage (.383) and posted career-bests of 1.84 kills per set and team-high 18 service aces. He finished as runner-up for Off the Block's National Blocker of the Year Award and was a finalist for the Ryan Millar Award as the nation's best middle blocker

Cowell, a senior from Makawao, Maui, earned first-team all-Big West honors in 2020 and was a finalist for Off the Block's Karch Kiraly Award finalist as the nation's best outside hitter. He ranked No. 3 in the Big West and No. 15 nationally in kills per set (3.77) and tallied double-figure kills in eight of 12 matches while hitting .400 or better seven times.

UH's 2021 schedule has not been officially announced at this time.
