Rainbow Wahine Come Together For Virtual Team Banquet

HONOLULU—With a little help from technology, the University of Hawai'i women's basketball team conducted its end of the year banquet via video chat on Thursday.

Even though the 2019-20 season came to an end after the quarterfinal round of the Big West Conference tournament due to COVID-19, the Rainbow Wahine and head coach Laura Beeman had plenty to celebrate from a successful season.

After leading the team in scoring at 15 points per game, and being named to the All-Big West First Team, senior guard Julissa Tago was named as the Ah Chew Good Award / Most Valuable Team Player.

"Jay will go down in the record books as one of the best in our program's history, and she deserves it," said Beeman. "The most important part is the woman she has become, and because of that, for years to come, she will be recognized by little girls across Hawai'i as their favorite player. She walks around with her head held high every day and isn't afraid to show it. I'm extremely happy for Jay and can't wait to see where her career goes. I can see with certainty I will be paying for a ticket to watch her professionally."

Tago, the two-time Big West Player of the week, turned in an impressive season offensively. She finished in the top 15 of seven different categories in games against conference teams, including scoring, field goal percentage, assists, free throw percentage, three-point field percentage, three-pointers made, and minutes played.

Beeman and her coaching staff handed out several awards, applauding the efforts all their student-athletes.

For the second consecutive year, junior forward Jadynn Alexander claimed the defensive award, while senior guard Savannah once again achieved the academic honor for the 'Bows. Freshmen Nae Nae Calhoun and Kasey Neubert were also recognized for their contributions. Calhoun was named Rookie of the Year, and Neubert was deemed as the Most Improved Player.

Alexander, Calhoun, and Neubert will all return for the 2020-2021 season, playing vital roles on and off the court for the 'Bows, along with a large recruiting class of seven newcomers.
