Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rainbow Wahine Extend Win Streak With 59-46 Win Over Cal Poly

San Luis Obispo, Calif.— The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team extended its win streak to four games with a 59-46 victory at Cal Poly on Thursday evening.

The Rainbow Wahine (12-10, 6-3) not only continue to win but do it convincingly, notching their third consecutive win of double digits. The Mustangs (5-14, 2-6) have lost three in a row against UH and currently sit in the bottom of the standings of the Big West.

The first half featured a slow start by the 'Bows in terms of scoring when compared to the previous conference matchups, but a 13-3 run to end the second quarter made all the difference. After back-to-back three-pointers by junior forward Amy Atwell in the final minutes of the half, UH began to pull away, combining to shot 50 percent from the field, for a 35-22 lead going into the locker room.

After UH built its lead to 19 to end the third frame, the Mustangs answered with a 6-0 run to start the fourth, but it was quickly snuffed out by an Atwell three-pointer and smothering defensive performance for the eventual final. UH held the home team to 31 percent shooting from the floor and forced 11 turnovers.

Atwell led the attack by finishing with 24 points, tying her season-high previously against Texas on Dec. 1, 2019. She hit five three-pointers on the night and went 7-of-15 from the field. She added a team-high seven rebounds while contributing 24 minutes off the bench.

Senior guard Julissa Tago was kept in check by the Mustangs defense, compared to recent production, but still accounted for 10 points, extending her double-digit scoring streak to nine games. She also added a team-high four assists and four rebounds.

A quite contributor of late has been junior guard Jadynn Alexander. While the green and white struggled at times from the field in the first half, Alexander sparked the offense, scoring all 12 of her points in the first 20 points. Her effort against the Mustangs notched the third straight game of over 10 points for the best three-game stretch of her career.

A common thread for the 'Bows' winning ways has been the ability to limit the turnovers. Totaling just eight against Cal Poly, UH has committed 10 or fewer turnovers against conference opponents in six of nine games. Another contributor to their recent success has been the bench play as UH outscored the Mustangs 33-12 from the pine. When the 'Bows bench outscores the opposition, they're 9-4 on the year.

The road trip continues for UH with a stop at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. The tip is slotted for noon HT and will be streamed live on BigWest.Tv.
