HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team evened its record at 4-4 with a 6-1 win over St. Mary's on Wednesday afternoon. The Rainbow Warriors have been on a roll, winning four of their last five matches.
With inclement weather threatening, the match started with singles. UH was dominant against the Gaels, with four of their five wins coming in straight sets.
Andre Ilagan started things off with a 6-4, 6-1 win over James Watt on the No. 1 court. After UH's Simao Telo Alves fell at No. 5 to SMC's Matis Bot, Hawai'i reeled off four straight wins. UH's No. 3
Blaz Seric defeated Karlo Divkovic, 6-4, 6-2 and Lucas Labruinie notched his first singles win of the season, knocking off Felipe Rincon in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2. UH's No. 4
Axel Labrunie then clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Abhishek Bastola, 6-3, 6-3. Hawai'i's No. 6
Tristan Martins held off Boris Reckow, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 to finish singles action. For Axel Labunie, Martins and Seric, today's wins on the singles court marked their fourth straight for all three of them.
With the match already in hand, the two teams played out the doubles matches. Hawai'i's No. 1 duo of Ilagan and
Lucas Labrunie defeated St. Mary's Watt and Reckow, 6-2, Seric and
Axel Labrunie followed with a 6-3 victory over Bastola and Rincon, 6-3 at No. 2. UH's No. 3 team of
Chia-Hua Lu and Alves then completed their doubles sweep with a 7-5 win over Divkovic.
The Rainbow Warriors have 12 days to prepare for PAC-12 opponent, Washington on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at the UH Tennis Complex.
