Men's Tennis Splits Doubleheader at Pacific Central Valley Championship

FRESNO, Calif.--The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team split its doubleheader to start play in the 2020 Pacific Central Valley Championships in Fresno Calif. Hawai'i fell to San Francisco. 4-2 to start the day, but bounced back to record an emphatic sweep over Pacific, 4-0 at the Copper River Country Club on Saturday.

The Rainbow Warriors began their first match against San Francisco playing singles. Hawai'i's No. 4 Axel Labrunie and No. 6 Tristan Martins won their matches for UH's two points. Martins defeated Johan Garpered, 6-3, 6-2, while Axel Laburnie came back from down a set to defeat Mitch Johnson, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Hawai'i's No. 5 Simao Telo Alves finished first after a loss against USF's Phyc Huynh 6-2,6-2. No. 3 Blaz Seric fell by a break in the first set, but Ori Maior pulled away for a 6-4, 6-2 win. UH's No. 2 Lucas Labrunie took Paul Giraud to three sets before falling 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.  USF's Nitzan Ricklins clinched the match with a three set win over Andre Illagan on the No. 1 court, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.


Hawai'i 4, Pacific 0

The Rainbow Warriors were able to bounce back to record a 4-0 sweep over Pacific. The 'Bows started the match sweeping in doubles for the early 1-0 lead. Hawai'i's No. 2 duo of Axel Labrunie and Seric finished first with a close 6-4 win over John Horoz Garner and Nathan Hampton. The doubles point was in the bag after No. 1 Illagan and Lucas Labrunie outpaced Akrom El Sallaly and Toi Kobayashi 6-2. No. 3 Alves and Chia-Hua Lu were down 3-4 against Manroop Saini and Coby McCaig when the doubles point was secured and did not finish.

Hawai'i then raced out to win the first three singles matches for the 4-0 sweep. No. 4 Axel Labrunie finished first after dominating Kobayashi 6-1, 6-2. No. 3 Seric handled Hampton after a tricky second set and won 6-4, 7-6 (4-2). No. 2 Lucas Labrunie smoothly finished the match by defeating Garner 6-4, 6-3 and cementing the 'Bows victory. 

The Rainbow Warriors continue the Pacific Central Valley Championships on Sunday. The 'Bows will take on the winner of the Lamar vs. Nevada match at 7:00 a.m. HT.
