Last week...
The Rainbow Wahine went 1-2 last week on the road in southern California. The 'Bows had a 3-1 lead to start the match at San Diego, winning the doubles point plus wins on both the No. 2 court (
Satsuki Takamura) and No. 4 (
Michelle Pits). But the Torerros finished strong, taking the last three singles matches all in three sets as UH fell, 3-4.
Hawai'i bounced back to edge out San Diego State, 4-3. Once again, the 'Bows captured the doubles point to take the early 1-0 lead. But the Aztecs rallied to take a 2-1 lead with wins on the No. 5 and No. 2 courts. UH's
Bojana Markovic's straight-set win on the No. 3 court evened the match at 2-2.
Madison Kim gave UH a 3-2 lead in the match with a straight-set win at No. 6 and Takamura clinched the victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Tamara Arnold at No. 1.
Hawai'i ended their roadtrip falling 4-1 at No. 22 USC. UH's
Nikola Dolakova recorded Hawai'i's only win against the Women of Troy over Carson Branstine, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4.
'Bows Start Season Against Tough Competition
Hawai'i has faced tough competition to start the season, facing four Top 25 teams in their first seven matches. The Rainbow Wahine opened their dual matches against No. 14 Washington followed by No. 16 Florida State before going on the road to take on top-ranked, No. 1 Stanford. UH finished their recent roadtrip falling at No. 22 Southern California.
Takamura Rises To No. 1
Takamura, a sophomore transfer from Pepperdine, started the season playing at No. 3 in UH's lineup. But after upsetting 49th-ranked Janice Shin of No. 1 Stanford on the road in straight sets, Takamura helped to lead UH to it's first win at UC Irvine playing at No. 1. She then played at No.2 at San Diego, but has played the last two matches at No.1. It marked the first time since March 28, 2017 that UH's
Petra Melounova did not play the top match for the 'Bows. Melounova has played the last two matches at No. 2.
Takamura enters this week with a 4-3 singles record. In doubles, Takamura has partnered primarily with
Bojana Markovic and has gone 2-2 on the No. 2 court together.
Leading the way...
Senior
Michelle Pits and freshman
Madison Kim also have four wins thus far this season. Pits is 4-3 overall and has won two of her last three decisions. Kim has primarily played on the No. 6 court and is currently 4-4.
