Rainbow Wahine Drop Matchup with UC Davis

Honolulu— In the battle for the No. 1 spot in the Big West Conference standings, the University of Hawai'i came up short to UC Davis, 65-48 Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine (14-11, 8-4) had their six-game win streak snapped and suffered the first conference loss at home this season. The Aggies (15-11, 10-3) created separation between themselves and the 'Bows with the victory, extending their lead to a game and a half with three games remaining on the regular-season schedule.

"We lost to a really good team tonight, and for whatever reason, we were not in sync," said head coach Laura Beeman. "You always know when you play UC Davis, they're going to scout you well, we had our game plan, but I think we were trying to do too much. We tell them to be shot ready. Catch, eyes on the rim, and tonight it didn't happen, we could never get in sync with what we wanted to do."

UH started strong with a 10-2 run, but UCD answered by pulling within one at the end of the first quarter. A combined 24-4 run from the first quarter into the second quarter helped the Aggies build confidence and put UH in a hole at the half, 33-26.

As play continued into the second half, UH battled and pulled within three at the start of the fourth quarter as 49-46 after a made three by senior guard Savannah Reier. The notorious Aggie defense went in to shut down mode with a 16-2 run, holding the 'Bows to just five points in the final frame. UCD has held UH to under 50 points in both meetings this season.

Junior center Lauren Rewers was a bright spot offensively for the green and white as she turned in 17 points, tying her career-high. Rewers went 5-of-7 from the floor and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.

As a team, UH shot 25 percent from the floor and 21 percent from three, both season-lows against a conference opponent.

UH will now go on its final road trip of the regular season with a visit to UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton on Feb. 27 and Feb. 29. The 'Bows will be looking to sweep both series with wins, as they knocked off each earlier this season at the Stan Sheriff Center.
