Hawai‘i Continues to Lead the Way in MPSF Championships

Los Angeles, Calif.— The University of Hawai'i swim and dive team capitalized on another productive day at the MPSF Championships as both the men's and women's teams sit atop the standings.

Going into day number two, UH and UC Santa Barbra were tied at first overall in both the men's and women's standings, but Thursday provided a little bit of distance as both UH squads are currently in first place with two more days to go.

The men's team currently leads the pack by 23 points with a combined score of 292 points with BYU at No.2 overall at 269 while the women have a lead of 30 plus points at 264 with UCSB sitting at No. 2 with 227 points.

Day three will provide an opportunity for UH to build on its lead with prelims slated for 10 am PT, followed by the championships at 6 pm PT. Featured events will include 100 fly, 400 individual medley, 200 free, 100 back, 400 medley relay, the men's three-meter dive, and the women's one-meter dive.

Swimming

For the third consecutive season, senior Phoebe Hines claimed first place in the 500 free touching the wall at 4:43.39, finishing seven seconds ahead of her teammate freshman Anna Friedrich at No. 2.

Joining Hines as a first-place finisher was junior speedster, Lucia Lassman, as she clocked in 22.70 for the 50 free, just one-tenth of a second ahead of Gwen Gustafson of BYU.

The men's side did not claim a first-place finish but racked up the points with numerous swimmers making their way into the championship heat of several races. Including the 200 individual medley with four Rainbow Warriors in the championship round, including senior David Springhetti leading the way at No. 2 overall.

Even though UCSB claimed a victory in the 200 free relay, the team of senior Mateusz Chaba, along with juniors 'aukai Lileikis, Micah Masei, and Franz Adam finished at No. 2 overall.

Diving

Sophomore Daphne Wils continues to make an incredible first impression as her momentum from the UCLA Bruin Diving Invitational carried into the first day of competition for divers.

Wils broke the UH record as well as the MPSF Championship record with a score of 388.40 in the three-meter dive finishing first overall. Wils led the pack coming out of the prelims with a score of 344.30 and later built on her strong start with a strong finish.

Joining Wils on the award podium was senior Jamie Stone as she finished third overall at 292.65.

While on the men's side, sophomore Max Burman finished at No. 3 in the one-meter dive with a score of 343.35. The senior combo of Lucas Cooperman and Grant Newcombe made their way into the finals placing at No. 6 and No. 7.
